The 33rd edition of the Montreal Film Festival starts tonight. It will be live from August 27 to September 7.The event will be attempting to stuff about 450 films from 78 countries into 4 venues in 12 short days and nights.
The kickoff will start when Cirque Éloize treads the boards of Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts before the world premiere of Montrealer Ricardo Trogi’s new movie 1981, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
That gala is by invitation only , for ourselves – the rank and file, there are two public screenings of Trogi’s recession comedy today – at the Imperial at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. just out the doors of Place des Arts there will be a ‘movie under the stars’ , event, Michael Wadleigh’s Oscar-winning 1970 documentary Woodstock, a masterful overview of three days of peace, mud and music that brought together a counterculture in mellow revolt against outdated American values and the Vietnam War. A half-million people participated in the phenomenon, which conveniently took place 40 years ago this month.
