Coroner’s inquest resumes into the police shooting of Montreal North teenager

Rioting erupted in Montreal North in August 2008 after the shooting of 18-year-old Fredy Villanueva by police. (CBC)

The two Montreal police officers involved in the fatal shooting of 18-year old Fredy Villanueva were never interrogated by Quebec provincial police, the officer who headed the investigation told a coroner’s inquest Monday.

The inquest into the shooting death of the teen in Montreal North resumed under the watch of a new judge.

The inquest was postponed twice this year, first in May, when key witnesses refused to testify after a dispute over legal fees, and again in September, when Quebec Judge Robert Sansfaçon stepped down for health reasons.

Montreal billionaire , founder of Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberte

The first ever widely acknowledged artistic performance from space will be broadcast from the International Space Station on Oct. 9.

Orchestrated by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who is set to launch to the station as a space tourist Sept. 30, the event will feature artists performing from 14 cities around the world, as well as Laliberte broadcasting from space.

Laliberte described the event, called “Moving Stars and Earth for Water,” as a “poetic social mission” to communicate the importance water has for the planet and its people.

Scientists have warned that water shortages rank with energy and food issues around the globe as top governmental issues now and in the future.

Montreal International Film Festival opens

The 33rd edition of the Montreal Film Festival starts tonight.It will be live from August 27 to September 7.The event will be attempting to stuff about 450 films from 78 countries into 4 venues in 12 short days and nights.
The kickoff will start when Cirque Éloize treads the boards of Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts before the world premiere of Montrealer Ricardo Trogi’s new movie 1981, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
That gala is by invitation only , for ourselves – the rank and file,there are two public screenings of Trogi’s recession comedy today – at the Imperial at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. just out the doors of Place des Arts there will be a ‘movie under the stars’ , event, Michael Wadleigh’s Oscar-winning 1970 documentary Woodstock, a masterful overview of three days of peace, mud and music that brought together a counterculture in mellow revolt against outdated American values and the Vietnam War. A half-million people participated in the phenomenon, which conveniently took place 40 years ago this month.
